MultiScan Yarn Hairiness & Broken Filament Laboratory Testing

Overview

The meiners-del YHM4, Yarn Hairiness Meter MK4, simultaneously measures hair lengths between 0 and 9 mm over a selected test length and selected test speed. Any number of tests may be performed on a yarn package (cop) and up to 25 cops may be tested automatically using the Mesdan Auto Cop Changer. The yarn istransported via an in-built yarn transport system. The yarn transport system uses a skewed roller to produce tension between it and the primary drive roller, it is the diameter of the primary drive roller and its rotational speed that determines yarn feed in Metres / minute. The drive speed is controlled digitally and is re-checked before every test, to ensure changes in yarn package tension does not effect the speed. This also eliminates affects of tension changes between each cop.

All the data, required by the hairiness meter, is input via the control unit keypad.

The data to input is:

  1. The Test Reference Number, used to identify the test or yarn being tested, a seven digit number (numbers only). Note that if using a p.c. with the YHM4 the test reference number is not required as the test data is saved to a file name.
  2. The test speed in Metres per minute, the speed range is 010 - 260 m/min. The data must include leading zeroes.
  3. The test length, the length of yarn used during each test, it is the number of tests at each of these lengths that produces the statistical data at the end of testing. The test length may be from 001 - 999 Metres. Again leading zeroes must be included when entering this data.
  4. The number of cops to be tested and the number of tests (at the above test length per cop). The minimum number of tests is 01 and the minimum number of cops is 01. The maximum test number is 99 and the Mesdan Auto Cop Changer is capable of changing up-to 25 cops per test set.

The * button on the control unit keypad is used to move the cursor between data fields on the 16 x 2 LCD screen. The # button is used to change screens i.e. move on to the next data entry screen, when entering data. When all data has been entered the # button is use to start the tests. If for any reason testing has to be stopped the * button may be pressed and the yarn transport drive will stop. Starting and stopping the YHM4 may also be controlled from the p.c.

During testing a red led, the MIP (measurement in progress lamp) is illuminated on the front of the control unit. Assuming a cop changer is being used with the YHM4, and the cop changer is connected to the cop change socket using the lead provided. At each cop change the green LED, the IH (insert head lamp, used during portable use of the control unit) will illuminate for approximately two seconds and the cop changer will operate.

The yarn, once tested, passes over the drive roller and then to the air mover and to a waste container. The air supply for the air mover is turned on automatically at the start of each test it is turned off during printing to save energy. There is also a manual override switch for the air, located on the instrument front, to the left of the air mover. A control regulator on the rear of the unit regulates the air supply to the air mover; a pressure gauge is fitted above this regulator. The air inlet connector is a 6 mm push connect type connector The air supply should filtered before connection to the YHM4 and should be oil and water free.

The electrical inlet connector is located on the rear of the unit; supply should be 90 - 260V a.c. A supply fuse is located on the rear of the unit, the power on - off switch is located of the front of the unit.

The control unit may be removed from the YHM4 base unit and used as a portable instrument, with a portable, mill patrol sensor head. In the portable mode only one hair length may be measured, this is normally 3 mm. Sensors are available for distances of 1mm to 5mm. In the portable mode, the unit is powered from internal re-chargeable batteries. The batteries may be charged using the charger supplied, but are not fitted when transported, in order to safeguard against internal damage to the control unit. If you wish to use the unit in the portable mode, the batteries need to be installed in the control unit.
